If you are like me, you love the book Storyworthy by Matthew Dicks.

It’s filled with actionable frameworks and practical advice for storytellers.

One of the beloved frameworks Matthew teaches in the book is a concept called Homework For Life. It works like this” Before you go to bed each evening, sit down in front of your computer for 5 minutes and ask yourself this question: “If I had to tell a five minute story onstage about something that happened to me today, what would that be?”

Easy enough, right?

I thought so, until I sat down to do it for the first time.

I found myself staring at my newly created document titled Homework for life wondering what was so interesting about my day. “Well I got up and I ate a bowl of cereal and I spilled the milk. I guess I will write that down, because I can’t remember anything else.” This went on for days. I would write silly things like this into my homework life file.

Then I gave up.

Because…

I couldn’t see how it helped me — or anyone else.

Until I realized what I was doing wrong.
