How I’m Reclaiming 24+Hours In My Week (That Used To Silently Slip Away)

I’m a fly-by-the-seat of my pants kind a guy.

To me:

Tracking time = waste of time

But then I realized I was losing time.

It was taking me forever to get work done.

I felt like 8–24 hrs per week was silently slipping away.

But I didn’t have proof.

So, I started redeeming my time with a timer & a notecard.

Enter:

The Pomodoro Tracking Process

Here’s how it works:

I grab a 3X5 notecard and a pen.

Then I write the date at the top of the card and underline it. Under the date I write a “1,” circle it, and then name the task I plan to work on first.

Next I set a 33 minute timer on my iPhone

I hit start on the timer and began working on task 1 until the timer goes off. Once the timer dings, I return to my notecard and write down what got done, what’s left, and anything I learned.

Then I write a 2, circle it, and write my next task.

I take a 3 minute break. Grab a snack. Drink some water. Stretch. Review my notes from the last task.

And I do it all over again!

I’m loving the change so far.

I can see my work happening in real time.

At the end of the day I have an account of my time and a list of lessons I can carry forward. It’s not perfect, I still get distracted and lose focus.

But at least I know when it happens!
