How I Got Interested In Writing

I wouldn’t call myself an expert in writing.

However, I have spent 5 years reading and learning about writing. And I have probably spent over 5,000 hours practicing writing in my own life. (Only 5,000 more to go to be an expert!)

Here’s how I first got interested in putting words on the page:

In 2001, I purchased a composition notebook and started journaling first thing the in morning.

I used the journal to write down observations from things I learned in the Bible. I captured character observations, nuggets of wisdom, and things I was learning about my own life. It became a rich part of my daily routine.

I was addicted (and free).

I was a terrible English student and what I loved about writing in my journal was that I didn’t have to turn it in for a grade.

  • No teacher looking over my shoulder
  • No standard to correct my incorrect use of grammar
  • And I could use periods and commas however I wanted

For the first time in my life, writing actually felt creative.

Since then, I started writing here on Medium and even for a few founders. I have “seasons” of publishing and then life happens.

So my goal over the next 90 days is:

My goal is to make writing publicly a daily habit, just like writing in my journal in 2001.
