Giving effective feedback is critical to strong leadership.
But it’s hard to give negative feedback without leaving someone feeling like you think they’re not good enough, or that you don’t trust their ability to do their job.
If you want to make sure your direct reports are always at their best, frame the feedback conversation in a way that inspires them to improve.
Here are 3 tips to delivering constructive criticism in a positive light:
Tip #1 — Be specific about what you are critiquing and how it could be improved
Be clear with the feedback you give. If you are vague or unclear, it is hard for your employee to know how to improve.
Give recent examples to help them remember it better.
“This report could use some work” isn’t as helpful as saying, “The formatting here is a little off. I’ve included some examples of better ways to structure this information.”
