Let’s face it, product managers are busy. I can’t recall a conversation I’ve had with a product manager where they were not distracted by 5 other things in the moment. Whether it be physical interruptions, slack messages, high priority issues, stakeholder meetings, testing releases or just making sure stuff gets done, a product manager is hair on fire, most of the time.
It’s the reality of the job. They own the product. Ultimately the success of the team centers around their ability to make sense of a multitude of inputs from the market, the business, customers and their teams.
The challenge for product managers is finding the time to focus. These windows of opportunity are small. If I had to guess, product managers probably do their strategic thinking while they are sleeping at night.
Product managers need the space to go beyond the noise of the day, beyond just concepts and abstract discussions. They need pause, but pause with intention.
